This Ghostface is not playing around, from the very first death, its brutality and savage nature shines through in the most vicious and intimidating killer of the series so far. The new setting gives this entry a visceral feel, New York serves as an excellent backdrop.
Melissa Barrera (Sam) and Jenna Ortega (Tara) and their sisterly bond ties this instalment of the franchise together perfectly. Tara and Sam’s trauma and how they have been dealing with the past plays a large role. This relationship is the backbone of the requel sequels of the Scream franchise.
The other half of the “core four” – Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy) and Mason Gooding (Chad) – add the comedic relief in most cases and the charm, with the latter being the major standout in this entry. Mindy has hilarious digs at true crime culture and Letterboxd!
Comparing to last years Scream (2022), it feels much fresher, the fifth film serves as The Force Awakens of the Scream franchise, whereas Scream VI feels more like its own thing. From the get go, it shows how different it can be from a usual Scream film with a bold and interesting opening sequence – something this franchise has become known for.
Other standouts in this cast, Josh Segarra (Danny) and of course Hayden Panettiere (Kirby) who returns after her run in with Ghostface in Scream 4 (2011).
